ABANDONED

There are many abandoned and derelict croft houses in the Outer Hebrides, providing a stark contrast to the pristine beaches and scenery usually associated with the islands. Depopulation due to economical and geographical reasons during the 20th century saw many young people leaving the islands for work or education on the mainland; many did not return, meaning the family croft was often left empty when the older generation passed on. Many still contain the personal effects of those who last lived there: furniture, clothing, ornaments and even family photographs, providing a poignant reminder of a life gone by.
