Aurora Borealis  

The Outer Hebrides is one of the best places in Scotland to see the aurora borealis (Scottish Gaelic: fir chlis) or northern lights as they are also known. An aurora (plural: auroras or aurorae) is a natural light display in the sky, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere. Auroral displays appear in many colours, and although pale green and pink are the most common, shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights appear in many forms, from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.
