Berneray, Uist & Benbecula  

Berneray (Scottish Gaelic: Beàrnaraigh) is a small island that lies in the Sound of Harris between Harris and North Uist. It is rich in wildlife and history, with a long sweep of white sand on the west coast, backed by high dunes and machair. North Uist (Scottish Gaelic: Uibhist a Tuath) is characterised by its patchwork of peat bogs, low hills and lochans, with more than half the land being covered by water, and its string of machair backed beaches. Benbecula (Scottish Gaelic: Beinn nam Fadela) lies between North and South Uist, and is small, flat, low-lying and dotted with lochs and lochans. It is linked by a causeway to the neighbouring Uists. South Uist (Scottish Gaelic: Uibhist a Deas) is a relatively large island lying between Barra and Benbecula. The west is machair with a continuous sandy beach, whilst the east coast is mountainous with a number of peaks.
