Lewis & Bernera​

Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas) consists of miles of atmospheric moorland, sparkling freshwater lochans and stunning white sand beaches backed by dunes and machair with giant sea cliffs and rocky outcrops. It is the most northern island of the Outer Hebrides, along with Harris. Lewis and Harris, whilst often referred to as separate islands, are joined by a land border. The flat, fertile land means Lewis contains the largest settlement, Stornoway (Scottish Gaelic: Steòrnabhagh), and three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles. The island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of animal and plant life, such as the golden eagle, red deer, otters and seals. Great Bernera (Scottish Gaelic: Beàrnaraigh Mòr) lies off the west coast of Lewis and is connected to Lewis by a road bridge, built in 1953. The main settlement on Great Bernera is Breaclete (Scottish Gaelic: Breacleit).
